The Lagoon of Messolonghi is one of the largest in Greece, which is an outwash of the sea from the alluvium of Acheloos.

It is a coastal lake that stretches from the Evinos estuary, the Acheloos estuary and the Ionian Sea. It is a very shallow sea with a depth that very often does not exceed 0.5 meters.

The importance of this habitat, which is also rich in flora and fauna, led to its protection by the Ramsar Convention and its inclusion in the Natura 2000 network.

It is a place teeming with life, with more than 280 species of birds recorded in the area, which is about 75% of the total number of species in Greece.
